10 Signs a Book Has Been Written by Me

Found this somewhere else and thought I'd give it a go. Here are '10 Signs that a Book Has Been Written by Me'.

1. It will be a dystopian novel - cleverly written (I wish) and well thought out and researched.

2.
It will be 450+ pages in length.

3.
One of the main characters will be a young man - perhaps mid 20s. He will be the 'hero' of the story, but he'll also be a regular guy.

4.
It will have a memorable closing line.

5.
My main characters will have enough of a backstory that readers will be able to identify with them, but not get bogged down or bored by too much detail.

6.
There will be a club of some description (possibly secret) where important (and perhaps sinister) business will take place.

7.
People of extraordinary intelligence will play an important role.

8.
Music will be involved somehow.

9.
My readers will be reduced to tears.

10.
My book will be compared (favourably) to George Orwell's 1984. :)

That's about all I can say without giving away too much! I have more details written out in a notebook, which would make it all sound more interesting, but this'll have to do.

Oh Kylie! I try to resist using blogging to plug my novel too much (it's not what blogging is about) but this is so near home I can't resist taking the test, even though we both know the answer ;)

1. It will be a dystopian novel - cleverly written (I wish) and well thought out and researched.

Yes - it is a dystopian novel. I hope it's all the things entioned at 1.

2. It will be 450+ pages in length.

Nope - 273 to be exact.

3. One of the main characters will be a young man - perhaps mid 20s. He will be the 'hero' of the story, but he'll also be a regular guy.

Nope - the main character is an intelligent but otherwise inept 30something - Bruce Willis in 'Die Hard' he aint...

4. It will have a memorable closing line.

I think it does. I like it anyway.

5. My main characters will have enough of a backstory that readers will be able to identify with them, but not get bogged down or bored by too much detail.

Hope so...

6. There will be a club of some description (possibly secret) where important (and perhaps sinister) business will take place.

Well yes if the apparatus of a fascist state counts as a club - it's certainly secret and sinister.

7. People of extraordinary intelligence will play an important role.

Ermmmm....

8. Music will be involved somehow.

In an odd way yes. One of the main characters, an elderly Jamaican called Billy keeps singing Bob Marley's 'Duppy Conqueror'. Shortly before it got published, I got worried about copyright and eventually managed to track down the agent for the copyright holder. They said it would take some time to get an answer from the copyright holder and there would be a charge for permissions. I though 'stuff that' and did a quick rewrite and Billy hums the song. All very silly really for a few fragments of lyrics.

9. My readers will be reduced to tears.

Well there has been one reported instance of a reader being reduced to tears. She's Australian too!

10. My book will be compared (favourably) to George Orwell's 1984. :)

In my dreams.....

So no - it's not me - but we both knew that anyway ;)
